How to Conceal Wheelie Bins Along Your Front Entry or Side Passage

Wheelie bins are an everyday essential, but having red, yellow, and green plastic lids sitting in full view of your front entrance or blocking a narrow side path lets down the presentation of your home. Here is how to screen them properly without making bin day a headache.

PRACTICAL DESIGN

The 4 Rules of a Functional Bin Enclosure

A bin screen that looks great in a photo is useless if you struggle to wheel the recycling out every Tuesday night. These four practical factors ensure it works effortlessly year-round.

Rule 1: Clear Pathway Width

Don't Choke Your Main Passage

Standard 240L council wheelie bins are roughly 580mm wide by 740mm deep. If your side path is only 1,100mm wide, placing bins sideways can restrict walking space to a crawl. We design custom recessed alcoves or positioning that keeps primary walkways completely clear.

Rule 2: Natural Airflow & Ventilation

Avoid Sealed "Hot Boxes"

Fully sealed solid enclosures trap summer heat and humidity, creating bad odours. Spaced batten screening (10mm–20mm gaps) allows continuous cross-ventilation while providing complete visual obscurity from eye level.

Rule 3: Ground Surface Level

No Wheels Sinking in Mud

Heavy green waste bins quickly dig ruts into damp dirt or lawn. A stable base—whether compacted permeable gravel, stepping stones, or level pavers—makes rolling 50kg bins smooth and effortless in wet weather.

Rule 4: Lid & Access Height

Easy Throw-In Clearance

You shouldn't have to roll the bin out just to drop in a single rubbish bag. Screen heights should either conceal up to lid level (approx. 1,060mm) or incorporate an open-top architectural bay with simple front-facing access.

MATERIAL SELECTION

Hardwood vs. Aluminium Screen Enclosures

We build wheelie bin screening from the same premium materials we use for our side gates and front entry screens so the entire area looks coordinated.

Natural Hardwood Battens

Spotted Gum and Blackbutt vertical screening softens concrete pathways and ties in naturally with garden beds and boundary trees.

Requires periodic cleaning and recoating if preserving original timber tone is desired.

Architectural Aluminium Slats

Timber-look or monument powder-coated aluminium battens provide clean lines, stable geometry, and wash-down maintenance.

Ideal for narrow, damp, or shaded side passages where timber requires more frequent maintenance.

WHOLE-AREA COORDINATION

Don’t Just Box the Bins—Fix the Entire Side Passage

Buying a standalone flat-pack bin box from a retail store usually leaves you with an awkward bulky item sitting in the middle of an already uneven path.

Better Here designs your bin concealment, custom pedestrian or side access gate, privacy screening, and surface detailing together as one cohesive upgrade that adds tangible value to your home.
